New York Times: Imagination, Covered in Icing

Well...What a year this is turning out to be for The Hudson Cakery!

Career highlight. See image above.
Today, I'm honored to be featured in the Sunday Edition of the NY Times. The editorial was written about four NJ custom cake designers who may or may not be affected by The Cake Boss's booming business.

Being a stone's throw away from Buddy and his crew in Hoboken, I definitely get some of his order overflow. And I couldn't be happier about it!

First, I'm Martha's Doer Of the Week and now the NY Times!?

Don't things normally come in threes? Yikes. I'm totally waiting for the other shoe to drop if that's the case...

Key to My Heart Dessert Table

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Today is a perfect day to share with you The Hudson Cakery's first official dessert table I created this past weekend.
(Yes, we've hopped on the dessert table bandwagon. And it's a fun ride!)

The theme was Key to My Heart featuring chocolate brown damask, ivory, pink and bronze hues.

Take a look....

Our stuffed Vanilla "Cupid" Cupcakes were wrapped with pink cupcake wrappers and topped with key 'n heart cupcake toppers.
The chocolate cake on top of the cupcake stand had bronze and pink hearts piped along the side.

I found old skeleton keys at The Brooklyn Flea last summer
and painted them shimmery bronze to hang from the table.

Lock n' Key Sugar cookies were decorated to look like vintage key locks.
The skeleton keys are made from sugar too!

We made Lemon "Meringue Kisses", "Passion Cake Pops" and "Made with Love 'Mallows." Homemade marshmallows are a personal favorite of mine - especially when they are pink!
Our mini cupid cupcakes were topped with sugar bronze hearts.

All the dessert labels were created by Marian
of Life on Paper - cute, right?

What do you think of our first dessert table??

Hope you have a SWEET day!

WOW!

Thanks to all of the editors, clients and amazing 2010 brides who gave us their vote!

Martha's Doer of the Week: See, I DO things!

It was ironic timing that the day after I left the Dreamers into Doers (DID) NYC event,
it was announced that I was the "Doer of the Week!"

Each week, a new female is chosen and interviewed by the DID staff to see who's pursuing their passion successfully. And they chose me. ME?! What!

You can read my interview here.

Here's the newsletter sent out to all the Martha's Dreamers:

I have to pinch myself that my face has been on the left side of the DID home page all week!

Since the announcement, I've been bombarded with messages of support, congrats and encouragement from my wonderful DID ladies, friends and family.

But I received a handful of emails -- like below -- which really amazed me:

Hi Jennifer,
I wanted to send you an email after reading about you in Martha's email. I've been out of work for about 4 months now and sort of felt discouraged about the dreams that I've had. Part of had given up and the other discouraged. I wanted to let you know that reading about your story gave me the inspiration to focus and know that things might seem unattainable right now but they will pay off in the end. I hope you have a lot of success.

See Dreamers...we really can be an inspiration to each other!

I believe this quote sums it up best...

You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one - John Lennon

Shout out to ALL dreamers everywhere!

Martha's NYC Dreamers into Doers Event

Last week, I was lucky enough to secure a spot at the 2011 Dreamers into Doers Event at the Martha Stewart Headquarters in Chelsea NYC.

For those of you who don't know, Dreamers into Doers (DID) is an online network of female entrepreneurs who turned their passions and hobbies into a career.

It's a very supportive and inspiring group of ladies, some of whom I was so happy to finally meet!

We couldn't post our photos of the Martha offices (find those here) but let's just say it's exactly what you would expect - Clean, colorful, creative and ORGANIZED.

Like an amazing OCD dream.

Fancy Screws? Really? I love it.

The two-day workshop included great speakers like Senior Editor
Terri Trespicio from Whole Living Magazine.
(You may have seen her on The Martha Show show last week!)

And Gael Towey, Chief Creative and Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO).

We were also treated to delicious lunches. And cake pops!

Danielle spoke from Etsy.com - a personal favorite website of mine. She was great!

So after some media training...

The moment we were all waiting for finally arrived...she arrived.

MARTHA!!!!

Martha spoke with Co-Founder and CEO of NY Stem Cell Foundation, Susan Solomon.
It was a very interesting interview about starting a non-profit and what obstacles Susan had to face in the beginning of her Foundation's journey. Pretty Cool.

I also met some wonderful women from various self-starter businesses like:

Jasmine of The Couture Cakery (another cakery in PA!)

Sarah De Jesus of the upcoming Dreamers Joy Events

Don't judge me on my flat hair - it was sleeting out, ok?

Marian Briscoe of Life on Paper -- Marian's currently upgrading her site so check back soon!

I also had the pleasure of meeting the adorable but camera-shy Carrie Harris of the
Sweet Spot Candy Bar and my fellow Jersey girl Heather Valentine from The Sewing Loft.

Such amazing talent under one roof was almost overwhelming!

The next morning we watched The Martha Stewart Show - live!
I had been to a few tapings of the show in the past but never did Martha send a shout out like this!
(fast forward to 2:12 minutes)

Such a beautiful and well-organized set.

She even answered our questions at the end of the show. So great!

The two-day DID event concluded with Sarah Casey, Food Editor for all of MSLO.

She was funny and knowledgable as she normally is on the show.

Thanks to everyone at MSLO for putting together a great event.

Do you have a dream you want to pursue further? I highly suggest joining the DID community!

Hot Hot Hot!

This past weekend, we created a fireman's hat cake for a newly appointed fire captain in Edison, NJ.

Check out the smokin' hot design....it's really burning up the page.
(OK, I'll stop)

The real shield on the client's hat was leather so was it was "stitched" accordingly.

All sugar! All edible!

p.s. This was the original hat we tried to re-create. Not bad, ay?

Happy 2011!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Hope everyone had a safe, happy and joyous countdown last Friday night.

I know at least one couple who did.

We created a beautifully simple Chocolate Cake for an elegant New Year's Eve Wedding.

The Bride also surprised her football-loving Groom with a Steelers football helmet cake.

All Edible!

Hope you were surprised Charles!

Congrats to you both!
